Nothing has taught me humility as much as working with alcohol inks. Flow: I yearn for it but find myself frustrated and resistant when my intentions are thwarted. When to hold on? When to let go? The process is spontaneous, intuitive, and unpredictable. Each piece is a unicorn!
Nestled: teal and magenta inks produced shapes which suggest a field of flowers. An acrylic ink pen defines the cluster.
Blossom: the same inks combined with gold create petals of a rose cupped within its peduncle.
Grace, alias Mercy, drops “as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath.” It was a gift for the Healing Center Full Gospel Church of Memphis.
Dancer: Magenta was created for an exhibit at the Memphis Botanic Gardens in 2021. It was inspired by Argentinian Tango music.
Harvest suggests late summer fruits and flowers, a bounty soon to fade.
Blue Hibiscus: like Nestled, the floral lines are completed in acrylic ink.
Blue Dancer, also created for the Botanic Gardens show, was inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.
Entwined: yellow and green ink washes suggest unfurling hosta leaves.
This technique is borrowed from Jess Kirkman: incising and burning holes in alcohol ink paintings, then layering them to produce more complex, multidimensional works. This piece suggests a look at human history through the lens of technology.
Permeable Layers 3 takes a more patterned and playful approach to multiple perspectives.
Permeable Layers 2 was inspired by Our Blue Planet; multiple perspectives inform how we interact with our world.
